Ath paros11/17/2023 ![]() Intertwining myth and reality, Santorini is every bit as beautiful as the countless postcards, magazine covers, and Instagram photos claim. The whitewashed houses and blue domed churches perched atop of soaring cliffs, the narrow cobblestone streets and unsurpassed views of crystal-clear blue waters - these all greet you as you step foot on this fairytale land. “Intelligent adults come here and turn into infants,” Craig Walzer, owner of the Atlantis Bookstore. Head to oracular Delphi, or hunt for where Lord Byron's carved his name into the monumental Temple of Poseidon at the tip of Cape Sounion. ![]() ![]() While Athens' variety is enough to keep you busy, from the hidden back alleys of the center, to the city's showy coast, the city works well as a base for day trips, whether down the coast, or to the Peloponnese. The city's culture is also reflected in its diverse food and drink, which combines traditional Greek favorites with influences from across the Mediterranean, and the world, as fitting Athens' deep history as a humming harbor hub. This combination of the old and new is especially clear at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, a spectacular open-air theater that has hosted concerts and plays for nearly 2,000 years. Starting with a tour of Athens and its ancient history, continue to Paros, one of the most easy-going Greek Islands, renowned for its pristine beaches. You don’t give dates of travel, so it’s difficult giving more precise advice, but on the Sifnos to Piraeus route in summer, you usually have the choice of larger - and more stable - fast boats, as well as conventional ferries. If you're dreaming of a vacation in Greece that has it all yet feels laid-back and comfortable, this 8-day itinerary is for you. ![]() If you wanted to fly back to Athens, Milos is nearer and has better connections, but even that I wouldn’t recommend. I wouldn’t waste time taking a boat back to Paros to catch a flight to Athens apart from the fact that it increases the risk if boats and flights are delayed or cancelled due to poor weather, by the time you have waited for a boat - including dealing with delays, taken the journey, and then got to the airport in Paros in plenty of time for your flight, you could have easily reached Athens with a direct connection from Sifnos (even if you take a slow ferry). Having said that, many people take these boats each year without difficulties, so you will probably be fine, but be prepared for delays. Paros and Sifnos are on different ‘mainline’ routes so the likelihood is you will need to take an inter-island boat which, as you have identified, is the Seajet connection - this uses small catamarans which are routinely late and are usually the first boats to be cancelled in poor weather. It’s always more straightforward if you visit islands on the same main ferry route to and from Athens, where you will usually find a better choice of boats and more frequent connections in the summer.
